A Brief Course Description
Cowes Golf Course is split into two "nines". The outward nine holes are somewhat shorter, with many fine old eucalypts and an abundance of wildlife spread over the undulating and sandy ground. The front nine can lull a player into a false sense of security with its traditional and enjoyable layout.
One of the unique course features is a pair of par 5's that bend almost in a semi-circle to the left. The first is No. 3, 478 metres and with a "false corner" on the drive. Only the longest hitters dare take the short cut off the tee which needs a carry of 240 metres across impenetrable ti-tree, followed by a similar second shot !
Cowes also has a demanding run of finishing holes. The 15th is No. 1 on the card, a 418 metre par 4 with a narrow green as the target. The 16th, a 366 metre par 4, plays into a cross-head wind and the green is attractively set amongst trees.
Cowes Golf Club is one of the few courses in the world where in many places it is only a metre above sea level. Hence the time of day and the tides can mean that a ball hit off the fairway at one time might be high and dry, but later or earlier may well be in a lateral water hazard !
The course is eminently suitable for players of all ages ad skill levels. It is a picturesque, challenging and extremely enjoyable course.
